Spain (Updated February 2010)
If you are going to Spain, then here are a few things to help you along.

Nearly all the Spanish restaurants have staff who speak English, they also have gluten free menus or at least gluten-free dishes, so ask for ‘La Carte Sin Gluten’. If they don’t have a gluten free menu, they will certainly have a number of dishes, just take your own bread ‘pan‘.

For gluten-free eating, try their fish dishes ‘Pescado‘, all the meat dishes, steaks, chicken ‘Pollo‘, lamb ‘Cordero’, avoid their gravy, lots of fish soups ’Sopa’ and for pudding, the Spanish love their Rice ‘Aros’ you can have it with Ice Cream ‘Aros con Helados Vanilla’.

If you decide to buy from a local store, look for any of the following stores, they all stock Gluten-Free food, from biscuits, cakes, and bread.

El Corte Ingles, probably the largest store in Spain, nearly all the towns have one.
Hipercor, a large chain of supermarkets, one in every town.

Mercadona, similar to Hipercor, look for their ‘Sin Gluten’ shelves.

Herbolarios, a large group of herbal stores, with a good choice of gluten-free.
LR and DT.
